What is it like to be raised by African Parents?
First of all, let me be clear on one thing: I cannot and I don't speak for Africans as a matter of fact. However, I love making generalization statements so today I thought I can say a few things about a topic I identify myself with. During my interactions with my friends from various countries across Africa, I came to realize that no matter the country, all African children go through almost the same childhood life.
African kids are almost raised similarly and the following things are commonalities:
- In your teenage years, you're dead if they see you with the opposite sex. This is even worse if you happen to be the daughter. From 21 though, you'll starting getting queries about whether you've found a husband or not(again the girl is the focus here). Boys don't really get that much scrutiny. But they are still asked whether they found a potential match.
- The sex education talk generally consists of “You're going to hell if you have sex before marriage.” Luckily my Dad was more liberal than this. But my mum told me of utter scary stories of the consequences of badly misbehaved promiscuous ones in society. Bottom line is always : "Don't tarnish family's good name."
- If you're not top of your class, you've failed at life. Literally. I remember this one time where my dad chased me from home for a day for coming second in one semester in the 6th grade! Of course I stayed at my friend's.
- Your opinions and feelings about things, even personal, don't matter because you'll always be “just a child” to them. This of course unless they need you to do something like drive them to the store or do a favor for them.
- African parents are the most dramatic people you will ever see. Shit goes from 0–1000 real quick. Didn't do the dishes? Then maybe you have joined a gang and sold your soul to the damn devil. Holy fuck! You might be called a satanist or anything society abhors.
- The slightest wrong you did is broadcast-ed to 2 million relatives who will all call you to voice their disappointment over the matter. You do not even know half of these people. “Thomas, I can't believe you didn't wash the dishes, you've brought shame on your whole family.” or "Andrew, how can you skip breakfast, your mother is tired of you". You might freak out a bit.
- On the better side of the previous point, they will also make sure to broadcast any good thing you do to make sure all your aunties with underachieving children get jealous. Something like "You know my son is top of his class this year?". "I knew he will be the smartest kid in the world"
- More than 99% of your opinions are probably going to be dismissed as liberal nonsense. Anything bearing a western similarity is scolded and looked down upon. Total freedom? Freedom of opinions and worship? Get the fuck out of here!! hahaha!
- You generally tend to think carefully about your actions because, hey, you know corporal punishment is awaiting for you at home. Mum is going to slap you with her cool sandals and shoes. Or even the wooden stick in the kitchen. Boy, you better be extra careful.
- Don't you ever ask to eat out. There will ALWAYS be food at home. Even if that food is a stick of butter or the leftovers from the previous day, your Mom ain't going waste money on a restaurant(except during holidays or celebrations). Even if you eat outside on your own and you're coming home, you better eat mum's food or hell will break loose!
- Most of your friends are generally rated on a scale of “That good boy who always studies” to “That rebellious and promiscuous one” or "That gangster who smokes/drinks". All hints on what to do or not to do.
- Your loving parents will always compare you to kids you know for a fact are worse than you. “Why can't you be more like Alex? He never gets into trouble and is well-disciplined.” Yeah Mom, Alex smoked a ton of weed this weekend and blacked out thrice and he has visited the police 4 times this year! Or when you get a B in a class, you mum be like "So the kid who got an A, do they have 3 heads?😂😂"
- Any soda or freshly made cakes you find in the fridge is for visitors. Consume them at your own peril. Even that tantalizing chicken the oven.
- If, by any chance, visitors give you any money, then it goes to the Bank of Mum, never to be seen again. Ask for it later at your own peril.
- If your friend's parents bought them an iPhone or Nike sneakers, ask your parents for the same at your own peril.
- Don't you ask your parents what they perceive to be a rather stupid question; you'll get a sarcastic and unrealistic reply in return. “Mum, where should I put laundry?” “Put it on my head, idiot!” or "Mum, are you cooking?" "No honey, I'm swimming!😂😂"
- If you hear you full names being called and mum is saying something in you local language, just know you're in a big trouble. Just don't mention me!!
- Your mum and dad are basically demi-gods. You know it doesn’t matter if you learned that the sky is blue. If your parents say the sky is grey, then the sky is in fact, grey. At least, in their presence.
- The oldest child will always be blamed for everything that the younger children do. Someone crash something, then it must be you(the older one)
- Anyone who is older than you is either your “auntie” or “uncle.” Calling them by their first name is basically a crime against humanity. I dare you to try!
- Your siblings will be the first people who bully the crap out of you. But later on, you’ll realize that they were preparing you for a big bad world out there.
- Religious attendance and practices is not an option. You have to attend. Simple.
